The School Nurse provides care that promotes students' academic success by:
- Managing chronic health care conditions.
- Providing interventions that return students to class.
- Intervening to lessen the number of students sent home.
- Identifying health related barriers and referring for appropriate care.
- Providing health screenings such as hearing, vision and scoliosis.
- Monitoring state immunization compliance
- Promoting a safe and healthy school environment.
- Educating students on health issues, promoting independence in managing own health care.
- Promoting student and staff wellness.
Confidentiality
Health information about a student that is given to the nurse is strictly confidential. Occasionally, it is necessary for teachers, counselors, and or administrators to be informed of a student's situation to help promote optimal educational opportunities. This may also be necessary in the event of an emergency which requires medical treatment.
Individual discussions that the nurse may have with a student are considered confidential, except in the circumstances where illegal activity is involved, violation of school policy or when a student's health or safety is at risk. The student is always informed of the nurse's obligation to report this information to the appropriate individuals, i.e. parents, administrators, social workers, psychologist, and/or Division of Family Services.
